In October 2018, two i-sense ‘Plus’ awards commenced after successfully receiving funding from the EPSRC.

These awards collectively contribute more than £2.3M to the initial £3.8M in follow on funding for i-sense Next Steps that was announced by then Science Minister, Jo Johnson, in December 2017.

'Plus' funding was made available to the three existing Healthcare Technologies funded EPSRC Interdisciplinary Research Collaborations (IRCs) in Sensing Systems for Healthcare to support new avenues of related research that were not part of the original IRC and to bring in new partners that were not funded through the original collaboration.

Applicants were encouraged to design their research to minimise barriers to the future implementation of its outputs in a healthcare context.

The two projects include:

  1. A smartphone powered mRNA sequence detector

  2. Ultra-sensitive enhanced nanosensing of antimicrobial resistance (u-sense)

  3. Harnessing digital and diagnostic technologies for COVID-19
